Hallie Gould, editor in chief of Byrdie, says her job brings about 100 beauty products to her each month. She keeps roughly 20 on her desk at a time and estimates she has about 50 at home, including around 25 products she uses regularly. Some are stored around her Brooklyn apartment, while the rest are kept in her bathroom.
To manage the steady flow, Gould follows a one-in, one-out approach: when she brings a new product home, she usually removes one she has not used recently. Every three months, she sorts through her collection and gets rid of items she has not tried, does not like or no longer wants taking up space.
She also tests products at her desk for a few days before deciding whether to take them home. Her main consideration is whether she actually needs the item; for example, she tries to bring home a moisturizer only when she has finished the one she is using.
Gould arranges products according to how often she reaches for them. Hair and skincare items go in the medicine cabinet above her sink, while makeup is stored in a drawer below. Daily makeup stays in a large case, and products she uses less often go in plastic organizers. Body products and miscellaneous items, including her blow-dryer and curling iron, are kept in a separate drawer.
