Textile designer Christina Bowlby has launched a new carpet collection titled Coming Home for Bentley Mills, drawing creative inspiration from her personal life and recent relocation. The collection coincides with Bowlby's first year as the company's senior director of design and her move back to California after living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While she initially fell in love with the South, Bowlby always envisioned returning to the West Coast, where she grew up, citing Los Angeles' culture, food, and natural diversity as key factors in her decision.

The collection's color palette is uniquely influenced by Bowlby's two Aussiedoodles, Birdie and Maggie. During her research for the project, Bowlby noticed that specific shades reminded her of the dogs' distinctive heathered coats. Two of the four available colorways are directly named after them: Cactus Wren, inspired by Birdie's warm golden fur, and Pure Magic, which reflects Maggie's softer mix of colors. The remaining two options, Arroyo Moon and Old Pasadena, reference the Southern California landscape, featuring an earthy neutral palette that mimics sun-washed sands, stone, clay-infused taupes, and muted moss.

Leveraging her background in hospitality design, Bowlby prioritized warmth and tonal complexity over sharp contrasts to create spaces that feel calm and comfortable. The collection utilizes Helix® premium nylon 6,6 and Revolve® technologies from Universal Fibers, which provide a heathered, wool-like quality. This allows multiple hues to mingle within a single surface, creating natural-looking depth through closely related shades of beige, taupe, gray, and brown without relying on strong color contrasts.

Visually, the carpets feature fragmented linear forms, overlapping markings, and irregular geometric elements that create movement and dimension across the surface. Bowlby's design philosophy focuses on noticing color in everyday surroundings, a habit she demonstrated by photographing a stone wall to capture its range of warm neutrals for future work. This attention to overlooked details aligns with Bentley Mills' approach to design, where familiar environments serve as the starting point for new creations. As for Birdie and Maggie, their contribution to the collection marks a unique chapter in their lives, though they have since returned to hiking and beach runs in Venice Beach.
