For people who enjoy the winter holidays but prefer to avoid overt Christmas decorations, Domino has outlined four ways to bring a festive feel to the home. The ideas also suit smaller spaces and offer alternatives to decorations that may only be used for one season.

The guide recommends lighting taper candles for everyday meals as well as special occasions, saying their flickering light can create a cozy atmosphere. It also suggests tying thin ribbons around the stems of wineglasses or champagne coupes as a quick detail for a holiday gathering. Red and green are options, while black satin is offered as a more understated choice.

Small cypress trees and Norfolk pines can serve as seasonal houseplants for homes without room for a large Christmas tree. The guide says many are about five inches wide and can be placed in small planters, arranged along a table or displayed on a dresser.

Plaid is another suggested way to bring in a winter mood. Tartan table linens, plaid throw blankets and checkered dinnerware can create a festive look, while remaining useful after the holidays.
