Sir David Attenborough returns to narrate Blue Planet III, a six-part documentary series examining new and previously unseen stories from beneath the waves. The series uses technologies including splash drones, remote underwater cameras and submerged domes to capture marine behaviour that has been difficult to film before.
The series premiered in the U.K. on Sunday, November 1, at 8 p.m. GMT on BBC One. Episodes are also available to stream for free on BBC iPlayer, with a new installment arriving each week.
The six episodes cover a range of marine environments. Tropical Seas explores the biodiversity of warm waters, while Open Ocean focuses on life in Earth’s largest wilderness. Seasonal Seas examines animals adapting to rapidly changing conditions, and Polar Waters travels to Antarctica and the Arctic. The Deep explores coral reefs, underwater mountains, volcanoes and hydrothermal vents. The final episode, Future Seas, follows scientists, conservationists and communities working to address challenges including overfishing and the protection of breeding grounds.
Blue Planet III is scheduled to premiere in the U.S. on AMC+ on Saturday, January 23, 2027. The service costs $7.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. The series will also air on BBC America, which can be accessed through live-TV streaming services such as YouTube TV or Sling TV.
A Canadian release is expected in the future after Blue Ant Media acquired the rights, although no date or platform has been confirmed. The series is expected to air on the BBC Earth channel. In Australia, there is currently no confirmed release date, but the documentary is expected to stream for free on 9Now when it arrives.
Viewers travelling abroad may be able to access their usual streaming service with a virtual private network, subject to the service’s terms and local restrictions. A VPN can connect a device to a server in the viewer’s home country, after which the user can open the relevant streaming platform and sign in as usual.
The production was filmed over four years across every continent and ocean, including Japanese rock pools, Antarctic research stations, waters around Australia and the open ocean. Each episode also includes roughly 10 to 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes material showing how the preceding installment was made.
The series’ title track, “Into The Deep (Seas Cry),” was created by singer-songwriter JADE and composer Hans Zimmer, with Thom Lukas of Bleeding Fingers Music. Blue Planet III Live in Concert is scheduled to tour the U.K. in 2027, combining footage from the series with a live performance by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.
