Mark Ruffalo’s demanding acting schedule once required a bicoastal lifestyle, but the Oscar-nominated actor and his family have gradually centered their lives in New York. His property history includes homes in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Catskills.
Ruffalo’s connection to upstate New York began in the mid-1990s, when he visited Callicoon in the Catskills. According to a 2017 interview with Men’s Journal, he bought a 27-acre property with a one-room cabin for $63,000 at age 28. Around 2001, he and his wife, Sunrise Coigney, moved to an estate on a former dairy farm that included a 19th-century post-and-beam barn.
The family initially divided its time between the Catskills and Los Angeles. That arrangement eventually became difficult, leading Ruffalo and Coigney to sell their Hollywood Hills home in 2009 and move to Callicoon full time. Ruffalo described the move as an effort to simplify family life and give their children more contact with nature.
The farm also became a place for Ruffalo’s personal projects. He built a woodworking shop and a chicken coop, and maintained a garden with vegetables, berries, apples and other fruit. Although the family later moved its primary residence back to New York City for the children’s schooling, Ruffalo said in 2016 that they continued visiting Callicoon on weekends, holidays and during the summer.
Before leaving Los Angeles, Ruffalo and Coigney bought a three-bedroom home in the Hollywood Hills for approximately $1.7 million in 2004. The single-story, gated property dated to 1933 and was designed in the style of a Connecticut farmhouse. It measured about 3,000 square feet and included four bathrooms, a detached guesthouse, beamed ceilings and a fireplace-warmed living room.
The couple sold the home in 2009 for $1.65 million to Zooey Deschanel and Ben Gibbard. Deschanel later sold the property in 2015, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Ruffalo’s next reported purchase came in 2015, when he bought a townhouse in Brooklyn’s Carroll Gardens neighborhood for $3.5 million. The 1899 residence covered about 3,000 square feet and featured four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a backyard garden, marble fireplaces, decorative arches, cathedral ceilings and wide-plank floors. It also included a large kitchen, a sunroom with a balcony and a curved wooden staircase.
He sold the Brooklyn property in 2017 for $3.2 million. After leaving Carroll Gardens, Ruffalo remained in New York City and shifted his focus to Manhattan.
In January 2017, Ruffalo and Coigney were seen viewing a six-bedroom Upper West Side townhouse listed at $9.99 million, although there is no indication that they bought that particular property. The couple did acquire a home in the neighborhood at a later point. Ruffalo said in December 2025 that he lived a block from West Park Presbyterian Church, whose landmark status he has publicly supported since 2023. His Upper West Side residence has been described as an early 20th-century, four-story townhouse, though details of the transaction remain unknown.
