Nate Klass wanted his kitchen to feel more interesting, but the room’s layout already worked well. Rather than undertake a full renovation, he focused on its appearance, turning the space into a 1970s-inspired room with purple-gray cabinets and a disco ball.
Klass described the original kitchen as an early-2000s design, with dark wood IKEA cabinets, a pink marble floor and a white subway-tile backsplash. He said it was not bad, but lacked character.
After initially considering colorful cabinet hardware, Klass decided to paint the cabinets in Farrow & Ball’s Brassica, a purple-gray shade. He carried the color onto the walls and ceiling, using a flat finish on the walls and a high-gloss finish above.
To bring the dishwasher into the color scheme, Klass covered it with contact paper and painted it to match. He plans to use the same approach on the refrigerator and the stainless-steel parts of the range.
Replacing the backsplash proved to be the most challenging part of the project. Klass said the work also required patching drywall, and he had to rent a tile saw to cut notches in the new tiles. Although he had been wary of using one, he found it manageable.
The finished room includes a disco ball hanging from the ceiling. Klass said afternoon light reflects around the kitchen and can illuminate the ball.
