Star Trek fans expressed their affection for Patrick Stewart through an unexpected Picard cosplay encounter at Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle in 2021. The experience offered a vivid example of the admiration surrounding the actor and the character he played in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Rob, the writer’s husband, assembled a simple Captain Jean-Luc Picard costume: a red-and-black Starfleet uniform shirt, a combadge, four captain’s pips and black shoes. His shaved head made the resemblance particularly convincing, although he wore glasses and a face mask, as the convention took place during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also wore jeans instead of the character’s usual black trousers.
As the couple walked through the convention center, attendees repeatedly called out to Rob with references to Picard, including “Make it so,” “Engage” and “Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra.” One person jokingly asked whether it was casual day on the bridge because of the jeans. Despite the many elaborate costumes at the event, the Picard cosplay received an especially enthusiastic response.
Other Star Trek cosplayers joined in. Two people dressed as Will Riker approached at different times to take photographs with Picard, while another attendee dressed as Kathryn Janeway posed for a two-captain picture.
The most memorable encounter came when a group dressed as the Borg spotted Rob. Their costumes featured working lights, cybernetic-style attachments and detailed makeup, with one member portraying the Borg Queen. The group jokingly acknowledged Picard’s casual attire before taking him along for photographs and a walk around the convention.
The experience contrasted with the couple’s other convention cosplays, including Rob’s portrayal of Dr. Stone and costumes worn by their daughter. Those outfits also attracted attention, but the reaction to Picard was far more intense. The writer described it as a reflection of Stewart’s status as a kind of “space dad” for a generation of viewers.
The account presents the cosplay as a reminder that the affection for Stewart extended beyond his performance. At the convention, fans responded to the familiar image of Picard with warmth, recognition and respect, turning a simple costume into an emotional tribute to the actor and his enduring place in Star Trek.
