Ridley Scott’s 2021 film “The Last Duel” is available to stream free on Tubi, giving viewers another chance to see a medieval drama that struggled at the box office. The film made about $30 million against a reported budget of $100 million, though critics praised it and it has since been regarded as one of Scott’s strongest recent films.
Based on Eric Jager’s book, the film dramatizes the last legally sanctioned duel to the death in medieval France. It follows Jean de Carrouges, played by Matt Damon, and Jacques Le Gris, played by Adam Driver, former friends whose relationship turns into a bitter rivalry. Ben Affleck plays their powerful lord, Count Pierre d’Alençon, while Jodie Comer portrays Marguerite, Carrouges’ wife.
After Le Gris assaults Marguerite, she names him as her attacker, risking the consequences of speaking out in her time. Carrouges then seeks the king’s permission to settle the accusation through a duel to the death, believed to leave the outcome in God’s hands.
The story revisits the same events from three perspectives: Jean’s, Jacques’s and finally Marguerite’s. This structure highlights how the men interpret and reshape events differently from the woman at their center. The film combines that examination of truth and power with the spectacle of its final duel, a particularly intense sequence in Scott’s filmography.
