The Solo Stove Summit Fire Pit is designed to bring a campfire atmosphere to outdoor spaces while reducing visible smoke. In a month of testing, the 24-inch model proved straightforward to assemble, ignite and clean, and became a regular fixture for backyard evenings.
The fire pit is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and uses a double-walled design that draws air in at the base and sends it through vents at the top. The review found that this reduced smoke once the fire was established, although a small amount appeared at first. The Summit is available in 19.5-, 24- and 27-inch sizes and comes with a lifetime warranty.
Setting it up involves placing the ash pan inside the pit, adding the Quick-Strike Cone and Fire Ring, then arranging firewood around the cone. Fire Starter Gel, sold separately, is poured over the wood and drains into reservoirs at the base. The tester found that using the gel made lighting easier; Solo Stove recommends starting with up to six dry, split logs.
The 24-inch version measures 24 inches across and 15.4 inches tall, and weighs 35.1 pounds. Its size provided room for up to seven people to sit around the fire, but its weight meant moving it took two people. After use, the pit can be cleaned once cool by removing the cone, emptying the ash pan and wiping the unit down.
Safety is important: the stainless-steel exterior becomes hot, so children and pets should be kept away. The tester also placed the pit well clear of roofs, patio overhangs and other combustible structures, with a hose or fire extinguisher nearby.
